Want to Stand Out?
"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."
-Philippians 2:3-4 (ESV)
Over the weekend, we took our camper van to the Spring Creek Motocross Park in Millville, MN, to watch the 2024 Pro National Motocross Race. Erik's childhood friend, Mike Luoma, races every year in the 45+ and 50+ categories before and after the Pro's Race on Saturday. Mike is a bit of a local legend. He's fearless on the track, especially in the 50+ races (the 45+ category gives him a little more competition.) His passion on the track is palpable.
On the last day of races, when most of the audience from the Pro races had cleared out, we watched Mike dominate the track. Near the end of one race, I noticed Mike stop at the top of the hill before the final turn. I asked Erik, "What is he doing?" Neither of us knew. As the second-place racer approached, still quite far behind, Mike waved him past. I was stunned! He had the win in the bag but let the other guy take first place. They exchanged a nod, and Mike took second.
Mike's act of kindness and selflessness moved me deeply. It was a display of humility I rarely see these days. There was no large crowd, no big reward, just a generous gesture to someone who probably needed it more. It reminded me of Philippians 2:4, "Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."
Humility is one of the most freeing virtues we can cultivate. It shapes our character and amplifies our influence over others in ways we often don't see.
Jesus is the perfect example of this. His incredible influence came from His perfect character and the alignment of His actions with His words. He lived fully in the moment, trusting God completely with the outcome. A single act of kindness, done humbly, can transform someone's world.
In a society where everyone tries to blend in and think only of themselves, dare to be different.
Be a rebel like Jesus. Be kind. Be gentle. Be humble.
Restful Rhythm:
Take a moment today to pause and reflect on an area in your life where you can practice humility. Consider how this small act can have a lasting impact on your character and those around you.
Journal Question:
How can you show humility in your daily life? Reflect on a recent situation where you could have responded with more humility. What will you do differently next time?
